World Pairs’ Pitch & Putt Championship

Portuguese Hugo Espirito Santo and João Maria Pontes, in June, finished the World Pairs’ Pitch & Putt championship in very flattering fourth place. The world IPPA (International Pitch & Putt Association) P&P vice-champions were part of the group of favourites of this first edition of the new FIPPA (Federation IPPA) tournament, played on the Tambre course, close to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, and didn’t disappoint. There were 54 pairs, coming from Cataluña, Galicia, Andorra, Ireland, Netherlands and Portugal, and victory went to Irishmen Liam O’Donavan and Pacelli Darcy, with 239 strokes, 31 under par, with rounds of 44 on greensomes, 98 individual, 47 in fourball and 50 in foursomes. João Maria Pontes and Hugo Espirito Santo finished 12 strokes from the winners, with 251 (-19), after rounds of 49, 105, 47 and 50. Note that on the last two roundss the Portuguese equalled the Irish champions. There was another Portuguese pair playing, made up of Candido Coelho and Pedro Mendes, who finished 24th (tied with 22nd), with 272 (50+110+53+59), +2, a good result in the middle of the scoreboard, in their debut in international competitions. Os portugueses Hugo Espírito Santo e João Maria Pontes terminaram em junho o Campeonato do Mundo de Pares de Pitch & Putt numa honrosa 4ª posição. Os vice-campeões mundiais de P&P da IPPA (Associação Internacional de P&P) faziam parte do lote de favoritos desta primeira edição do novo torneio da FIPPA (Federação Internacional de Pitch Putt Association), realizado no percurso Tambre, perto de Santiago de Compostela, em Espanha, e não desiludiram. Houve 54 pares oriundos da Catalunha, Galiza, Andorra, Irlanda, Holanda e Portugal e a vitória foi para os irlandeses Liam O’Donavan e Pacelli Darcy, com 239 pancadas, 31 abaixo do Par, com voltas de 44 em greensomes, 98 individual, 47 em fourball e 50 em foursomes. João Maria Pontes e Hugo Espírito Santo ficaram a 12 pancadas dos vencedores, com 251 (19), após voltas de 49, 105, 47 e 50. Repare-se como nas duas últimas jornadas os portugueses igualaram os campeões irlandeses. Houve outra dupla portuguesa em prova, constituída por Cândido Coelho e Pedro Mendes, que terminou em 24º (igual aos 22º), com 272 (50+110+53+59), +2, um bom resultado, a meio da tabela, na sua estreia em competições internacionais.
