The uniqueness of the Clube de Golfed a Ilha Terceira (CGIT) started on its very creation. It was founded in 1954 based on “an agreement and statute for the establishment of a golf course in Terceira island” drawn by the then president of the Junta Geral do Distrito Autonomo de Angra do Heroismo, the commander of Base Aérea nr 4 and the commander of the US forces stationed in Lajes. The Junta Geral - the then administrative body of (part of) the Azores - decided, in its extraordinary session of June 15th 1954 to allow the construction of a golf course at Queimadas, without any costs being incurred by the said Junta Geral, and that for its use a regulation was to be drawn by the Junta and the command of BA4. According to the decision by the Junta Geral, the use of the golf course, which was to remain property of the Junta Geral, was to be enjoyed by both nationals and foreigners, civilian or military. Still today the statutes of the club are unique, as the members don’t elect the fiscal council, but it is named by the three founding entities, with the Governo Regional of the Azores having replaced the Junta Geral. In the fifties and sixties no one played without a caddie, and the thousands of Americans stationed at Lajes made an intensive use of the course, which meant a considerable number of caddies. These children and youth contributed, in very difficult times, for the meagre income of the families. They earned in dollars, and very frequently they’d bring back home more than their parents earned for their work. The club even had its own school, where it taught English. Asingularidade do CGIT começou logo na sua constituição. Foi fundado em 1954 com base num “Acordo e Regulamento para o estabelecimento de um Campo de Golfe na Ilha Terceira” estabelecido entre o então Presidente da Junta Geral do Distrito Autónomo de Angra do Heroísmo, o Comandante da Base Aérea n.º4 e o Comandante das Forças dos Estados Unidos da América estacionadas nas Lajes . A Junta Geral veio a deliberar, na sua sessão extraordinária de 15 de Junho de 1954, que a construção de um campo de golfe nas “Queimadas” fosse levada a efeito sem encargos financeiros para aquele Corpo Administrativo, devendo elaborar-se para a sua utilização desportiva um regulamento entre a mesma Junta Geral e o Comando da B.A. 4. De acordo com o deliberado pela Junta Geral, o regulamento deveria assentar no princípio de que o uso desportivo do campo de golfe, o qual era legal propriedade inalienável daquele Corpo Administrativo, seria indistintamente para nacionais ou estrangeiros civis ou militares. Ainda hoje os estatutos desta colectividade são únicos pois os sócios não elegem o conselho fiscal que é nomeado pelas três entidades fundadoras, com o Governo Regional dos Açores a substituir a extinta Junta Geral. Nos anos 50 e 60 ninguém jogava sem caddy e os milhares de norte-americanos estacionados nas Lajes faziam um uso intenso deste equipamento o que implicava um número considerável dos mesmos. Estas crianças e jovens de tenra idade contribuíam, em tempo de vacas muito magras, para o sustento das suas famílias. Ganhavam em dólares e traziam muitas vezes para casa valores superiores ao que os pais ganhavam nas suas jornas. O clube chegou a ter escola própria onde se ensinava o inglês. many learned to play golf from youth, and this means that this club has had, for the last decades, the biggest number of players with single digit handicaps. From former caddies and the club’s schools there were national and international champions, as well as teaching professionals. As a team the club always competes for the top positions in the mid-amateurs and senior, having been national champion and vice champion in various occasions. It’s a very active club, in terms of sport, with over fifteen tournaments played every year, with more than eighty players taking part from all ages, origins and classes, with the big focus being the ProAm of the Ilha Terceira, the most charismatic tournament in the national professional golf circuit, which is to be played this year for the 36th time. It is a very technical and competitive course, being the stage for great competitions, as happened just last year, with the playing of the 7th Açores Ladies’ Open, a LETAS competition. It’s social and services areas are exemplary, with the Azores hall, the best meeting area in the Azores, being the venue for a number of events. adulta, arranjar melhores empregos, principalmente na base norte-americana. Como os caddies podiam jogar um dia por semana, levou a que muitos aprendessem a jogar golfe desde jovens o que faz com que o clube seja, nas últimas décadas, o que conta com mais golfistas de handicap com apenas um digito. Dos ex-caddies e da formação do clube já surgiram campeões nacionais, internacionais e profissionais de golfe. A nível colectivo o clube luta sempre pelas posições cimeiras nos escalões de mid-amateur e seniores, já se tendo sagrado campeão e vice-campeão nacional por diversas vezes. Desportivamente é um clube muito ativo, realizando-se anualmente mais de dezena e meia de provas com médias de participação superiores a oitenta jogadores, de todas as origens e classes sociais, e de que se destaca, em julho, o Pro-Am da Ilha Terceira, a mais carismática prova do circuito profissional nacional de golfe, e que este ano se vai realizar pela 36ª vez. O campo é muito técnico e competitivo sendo palco de grandes competições como ainda aconteceu em abril passado, com a realização do 7º Açores Ladies Open, prova da LETAS. A sua sede social e serviço são exemplares possibilitando a realização na Sala Açores, a melhor sala de eventos da região, de eventos do mais elevado nível.
