GOLF: THE POOR “RELATIVE”

Golf continues to be an important market in the economy of all the countries that are tourist destinations, all over the world. In Portugal, considered several times over the last 30 years the best golf destination in the world and best golf destination in Europe, golf is not even considered by the country’s government. Golf numbers for visitors and recipes remain hidden in the numbers of Tourism. So no one can claim anything. Portugal is one of the biggest golf destinations, especially in Europe. It has the best courses on the European continent and where you can play all year round. It has had several tournaments in the European calendars (Tour, Challenge, Ladies, second and third divisions). Now there is only the Portugal Masters and since last year the Portuguese Open, as well as a professional circuit in the Algarve in the winter, which could be among the best in Europe if there was any interest in tourism to support the initiative. With this official “alienation” they are also losing the young Portuguese professionals. If there were more European evidence there would be more competition for them, providing more experience. So, stagnation continues, internal competition and training between friends, betting the lunch... But the main authority, the Federation, also does nothing to contribute to the evolution of national golf, amateur or professional. The current federative administration still has not shown work, despite the promises during the electoral campaign. Something is not right.

Ogolfe continua a ser um mercado importante na economia de todos os países que são destinos turísticos, em todo o mundo. Em Portugal, considerado várias vezes ao longo dos últimos 30 anos o melhor destino golfe do mundo e melhor destino golfe da Europa, o golfe nem sequer é “considerado” pelos governantes do País. Os números do golfe, quanto a visitantes e receitas, continuam dissimulados nos números do Turismo. Assim ninguém pode reclamar nada. Portugal é um dos maiores destinos golfe, sobretudo na Europa. Tem dos melhores campos do continente europeu e onde se pode jogar durante todo o ano. Chegou a ter vários torneios nos calendários europeus (Tour, Challenge, Ladies, segunda e terceira divisões). Agora tem apenas o Portugal Masters e desde o ano passado o Open de Portugal, bem como um circuito profissional no Algarve, no inverno, que poderia ser dos melhores da Europa se houvesse algum interesse do turismo em apoiar a iniciativa. Com este “alheamento” oficial ficam também a perder os jovens profissionais portugueses. Se houvesse mais provas europeias haveria mais competição para eles, proporcionando mais experiência. Assim, continua a estagnação, a competição interna e o treino na base da partidinha entre amigos, para o almoço… Mas a autoridade principal, a Federação, também nada faz para contribuir para a evolução do golfe nacional, amador ou profissional. A atual gestão federativa ainda não mostrou trabalho, apesar das promessas durante a campanha eleitoral. Alguma coisa não está bem.
