Pedro Lencart

In just two years, the talent of Pedro Lencart crossed borders, turning the 17-year-old golfer into one of the most promising players in European golf. Europe first noticed Lencart in July last year when at the Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club in Scotland, he won the Junior Open, one of the under-16 majors. A year later, again in Scotland, but now at the Nairn Golf Club, Pedro Lencart won The Boys Amateur Championship. He was the second Portuguese to win this prestigious tournament, after his idol Pedro Figueiredo in 2008, and was the first player since Sergio Garcia to win both the Junior Open and The Boys. But the story of this link between Pedro Lencart and golf, which continues to play a minor role when compared to his studies, began 12 years earlier, the day his mother took him to play mini-golf. Then continued on Montado’s driving range and grew up in Miramar, right next to the course. Em apenas dois anos, o talento que Pedro Lencart galgou fronteiras, transformando o golfista de 17 anos numa das promessas do golfe europeu. A europa reparou pela primeira vez em Lencart em Julho do ano passado quando no Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club, na Escócia, venceu o Junior Open, um dos majors mundiais de sub-16. Um ano depois, novamente na Escócia, mas agora no Nairn golf Club, Pedro Lencart conquistava o The Boys Amateur Championship. Foi o segundo português a vencer este prestigiado torneio, depois do seu ídolo Pedro Figueiredo em 2008, e foi o primeiro jogador desde Sergio Garcia a conseguir o Junior Open e o The Boys. Mas a história desta ligação de Pedro Lencart e o golfe, que continua a ter um lugar secundário quando comparado com os estudos, começou 12 anos antes, no dia em que a mãe o levou a jogar mini-golfe. Continuou depois no drivingrange do Montado e foi crescendo em Miramar, ali junto de casa.

At what age did you start playing?

I started playing golf when I was 7, because my parents were at the time living near the Montado Hotel and Golf Resort. I started taking lessons on weekends and hitting balls during the week after school. After a few months we moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and asked to transfer to Miramar, because it is close to home, and I remain here.

You are very young...

At five, my mother took me to play mini golf and I liked it very much. When I lived in Montado a friend of my father was a golfer and as I wanted to try he advised my parents to enroll me in lessons. At Montado I only had lessons and I practiced, but when I moved to Miramar my coach Nelson Ribeiro assigned me a handicap and I started to enter junior tournaments.

Miramar has always been your club. Any special reason?

It started out as a club close to home and that is still the case today. And also because I like my coach and the conditions of the course.

Com que idade começou a jogar golfe?

Comecei a jogar golfe aos 7 anos pois os meus pais estavam na época a viver na Urbanização do Golfe do Montado. Comecei a ter aulas aos fins de semana e a bater bolas durante a semana quando saía da escola. Após alguns meses mudámos para Vila Nova de Gaia e pedi transferência para o Club de Golf de Miramar, por ser perto de casa, e aqui permaneço.

Começou bem cedo…

Aos 5 anos a minha mãe levava-me a jogar mini golfe e gostava muito. Quando vivi no Montado um amigo do meu pai jogava golfe e como eu queria experimentar ele aconselhou os meus pais a inscreverem-me nas aulas. No Montado só tive aulas e treinei mas quando mudei para Miramar o meu treinador Nelson Ribeiro atribui-me handicap e comecei a entrar em torneios para juniores.

O Miramar tem sido sempre o seu clube. Alguma razão especial?

Começou por ser um clube perto de casa e ainda hoje se mantém. Também porque gosto do meu treinador e das condições do campo.

When did you start taking golf more seriously?

Since I started playing tournaments I take golf very seriously.

How does your family look at your link to golf?

My parents give me unconditional support as long as I finish my studies.

How much time do you spend every day on golf?

I play golf every day, on average 3 to 4 hours a day.

Is it easy to combine golf with studies?

It’s not easy and sometimes I have to wake up very early to study.

What do the victories in the Junior Open and the Amateur Boys mean to you?

They have had a huge significance in my career so far, especially since both tournaments are on links style courses I really enjoy, and the British Boys have always been my goal since I started playing internationally.

Quando começou a levar o golfe mais a sério?

Desde que comecei a entrar em torneios que levo o golfe muito a sério.

Como é que a sua família olha para a sua ligação ao golfe?

Os meus pais dão-me apoio incondicional desde que termine os meus estudos.

Quanto tempo diário dedica ao golfe?

Pratico golfe todos os dias numa média de 3 a 4 horas por dia

É fácil conciliar com os estudos?

Não é fácil e por vezes tenho que acordar muito cedo para estudar.

As vitórias no Junior Open e no Boys Amateur o que significam para si?

Tiveram um enorme significado na minha carreira até agora, especialmente, porque ambos os torneios realizam-se em links, estilo de campos que aprecio bastante, e o british boys sempre foi um objectivo meu desde que comecei a jogar a nível internacional.

Who are your idols?

In Portugal, Pedro Figueiredo and Ricardo Melo Gouveia. Internationally, Tiger Woods has been my choice since I started golf.

Are you going to the United States to study?

Yes, I’m going to college next year at UCF - University of Central Florida. The course of study is not yet fully defined but it will be Economics or Management.

The goal is to turn pro, right?

Yes, but first finish college.

Have you been supported enough?

I have to thank everyone who has helped me, especially my parents, my coach and Titliest / Footjoy who supports me as an amateur in golf equipment.

Quais são os seus ídolos?

Em Portugal o Pedro Figueiredo e o Ricardo Melo Gouveia. Internacionais o Tiger Woods foi o meu eleito desde que comecei o golfe.

Vai para os Estados Unidos estudar.

Vou no próximo ano letivo para a UCF - University of Central Florida. O curso ainda não está completamente definido mas será Economia ou Gestão.

O objetivo é a profissionalização, certo?

Sim, mas primeiro acabar os estudos na universidade.
