They are two players with strong ties to the honoree, as he himself explained: “Jorge is my brother, the same father and mother different. He started playing golf at the same time as me, with 8 or 9 years. Thomas has been my student for less than a year, he’s only 16 and this was the first tournament I ever played. “
António Sobrinho criou um torneio com o seu nome, a Taça Sobrinho & Amigos, com o objetivo de celebrar todos os anos uma carreira de 25 anos que levou-o a ser o recordista de 11 vezes vencedor do Campeonato Nacional de profissionais. “Aos 46 anos, achei que era a altura certa de reunir-me todos os anos com familiares e amigos que me ajudaram ao longo dos anos ou que simplesmente gostam de confraternizar comigo”, disse o português natural de Angola, que reside há muito no Algarve. “O torneio será disputado todos os anos no dia 9 de dezembro porque foi nessa data, há exatamente 25 anos, que me tornei profissional e foi também nesse dia que comecei uma bela história de amor com minha mulher”, acrescentou o jogador que continua a competir em bom nível e a integrar a seleção nacional da PGA de Portugal. “Este ano consegui o apoio da Quinta do Lago e da Nike, através da NorGolfe, e chamei a promotora de eventos Paula Reis, da Hole in One, para ajudar-me na organização. Estou seguro de que para o ano a Taça Sobrinho & Amigos será melhor”, concluiu o antigo membro do Asian Tour e do Challenge Tour, que ultimamente tem competido no Portugal Pro Golf Tour. Este ano o torneio realizou-se no percurso Sul da Quinta do Lago, onde deverá manter-se pela razão sentimental de ter sido ali que “Sobras” nasceu para o golfe. A participação foi elevada, com 84 jogadores vindos de Angola, Inglaterra e de várias regiões de Portugal, atestando a popularidade de António Sobrinho. O vencedor foi Jorge Prata com 41 pontos stableford, exatamente o mesmo resultado do francês residente no Algarve, Thomas Gaston, tendo sido necessário recorrer ao sistema de desempate. São dois jogadores com fortes ligações ao homenageado, como o próprio explicou: “O Jorge é meu irmão, do mesmo pai e de mãe diferente. Começou a jogar golfe ao mesmo tempo do que eu, com 8 ou 9 anos. O Thomas é meu aluno há menos de um ano, tem apenas 16 anos e este foi o primeiro torneio que jogou”.
