-

Lucas Azinheiro and Rita Costa Marques were the absolute winners of the 1st Dom Pedro Junior Masters, which took place over two days on the Dom Pedro Victoria course in Vilamoura, with the participation of 60 players from ten nationalities, between the ages of 8 and 18. Rita Costa Marques, from the under-14 level, finished the two rounds in stroke play with 140 strokes (71-69), and Lucas Azinheiro, from the schools of the Vilamoura GC, played in the U16’s and also finished with 140 strokes (7367). The tournament, which was a success, had the participation of young people from Portugal (most), Spain, Canada, Germany, Slovakia, Holland, Great Britain, Ireland, USA and France. “We have the tradition of encouraging young people to practice golf, confirmed over the years by the Vilamoura GC and it was worthwhile to take advantage of the dynamics of the 8 to 18 year olds, encouraging them to improve and involving their families,” said Luís Correia da Silva, chairman of the board of directors of Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection. “We are going to make two annual editions, taking advantage of school holidays. One at Carnival and one in summer. We want to have more young people in this competition and make it better known in the Algarve and in the Country,” he added. In this inaugural edition was the first hole-inone, obtained by Bernardo Fraga Bebiez, 12 years old, a student of José Ferreira at the Quinta do Lago school. He has been playing for six years and has a handicap 13. The feat was obtained at Victoria’s 8th hole, throwing a pitch for the 90 meters. The prizes were distributed after the lunch of conviviality that involved the young participants and their relatives. At the trophy presentation were representatives of FPG and the Municipality of Loulé.
