The apotheosis way that Madeira welcomes the New Year, every year, reveals the enthusiasm with which Madeirans celebrates life. From the tropical rhythms of Carnival, to the fragrant freshness of the Flower Festival. From the colourful musical of the Atlantic Festival to the warm summer days. From the Wine Festival, where wine named after the island is celebrated around the world, at Christmas and on New Year’s Eve. The year ends as it began: in celebration. It is difficult to find a time of the year or a month that did not have an added reason to visit this Portuguese archipelago, which is at the distance of about three hours from the main European capitals. Therefore, the slogan from the tourism authorities - Madeira All Year - makes perfect sense. Let’s start at the beginning of this Madeira All Year. With the Madeira Carnival, which will take place between the end of February (26th) and the beginning of March (10). In Europe, it is not easy to find a street party of this size. The highlights of the event are the main parade, where the carnival groups are adorned with vibrant and colourful costumes to cover the main streets of Funchal and, a few days later, on Tuesday, the Trapalhão parade. Everyone can participate. Just a disguise and a dose of good fun is required. The Flower Festival fills the whole month of May (2 to 26) and motivates several reasons of interest. Amaneira apoteótica como a Madeira dá as boas-vindas, todos os anos, a cada ano, revela bem o entusiasmo com que os madeirenses celebram a vida. O arquipélago Atlântico guarda nas suas montanhas verdes e vales profundos 600 anos de história, e faz questão de os festejar ao longo de todos os meses com festas e festivais para todos os gostos e bolsas. Dos ritmos tropicais do Carnaval, à frescura perfumada da Festa da Flor. Do colorido musical do Festival do Atlântico, aos dias cálidos de Verão. Da Festa das Vindimas, onde se celebra o vinho que leva o nome da ilha pelo mundo, ao Natal e passagem de ano. O ano acaba como começou: em festa. É difícil encontrar uma época do ano ou um mês que não tinha um motivo acrescido para visitar este arquipélago português, que está à distância de cerca de três horas das principais capitais europeias. Por isso, o slogan das autoridades de Turismo – Madeira All Year – faz todo o sentido. Comecemos então pelo início deste Madeira All Year. Pelo Carnaval da Madeira, que no próximo ano decorre entre o final de Fevereiro (dia 26) e o início de Março (10). Na Europa, não é fácil encontrar uma festa de rua desta dimensão. Os pontos altos do evento são o cortejo principal, onde as trupes se engalam com fantasias vibrantes e coloridas para percorrer as principais artérias do Funchal e, dias depois, na terça-feira, o Cortejo Trapalhão. Todos podem participar. Basta um disfarce e uma dose de boa disposição. A Festa da Flor enche todo o mês de Maio (2 a 26) e motiva vários motivos de interesse. This festival promotes and encourages direct contact with nature, with a diversified program and for all ages: hiking, canyoning, swimming in the ocean, climbing, surfing, mountaineering and mtb. Then we have December, with the Christmas and New Year celebrations starting at the beginning of the month. The main streets of Funchal are decorated in precept with lots of lights and colour . There is music, gastronomy and lots of entertainment downtown, which ends on December 23rd, the night when practically the whole of Madeira converges at the Mercado dos Lavradores (the city market) area in Funchal. The New Year’s Eve is celebrated all over the island, in hotels, restaurants, bars and even on the streets, and at midnight all eyes point to the sky for spectacular fireworks display that illuminate the night sky in Funchal. The natural beauty of an island that offers, ‘all year’ a diversity of natural, gastronomic and leisure attractions. Always at mild temperatures, be it summer, or winter. Always with a quality of service that only Madeira, one of the oldest tourist destinations in the world, knows how to offer. mundo melhor. Junho, naquele que tem sido considerada sucessivamente pelos World Travel Awards como o Melhor Destino Insular do Mundo, é preenchido pelo Festival do Atlântico. Um evento anual dividido pelo Festival de Música da Madeira e pelo Concurso Internacional de Fogo-de-Artifício. Todos os sábados, a baía do Funchal enche-se de cor e de música para os espectáculos pirotécnicos. Já a música, percorre toda a ilha: Palácio de São Lourenço, Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, igrejas e o Mudas Museu de Arte Contemporânea. De julho, a setembro é tempo de férias na Madeira. Esta época leva muitos madeirenses à ilha vizinha, o Porto Santo, à procura de um lugar ao sol no extenso areal dourado onde Cristóvão Colombo viveu largos anos. No calendário da ilha que nunca descansa, mas onde tão bem se descansa, segue-se a Festa do Vinho Madeira. Final de Agosto e princípio de setembro, por altura das vindimas, e numa homenagem à importância social e económica do Vinho Madeira para a ilha, são reconstituídas as antigas tradições da apanha e pisa da uva. Também em Setembro, mas no Porto Santo, decorre o Festival Colombo que assenta na recriação histórica da época em que o descobridor das ‘américas’ viveu naquela ilha. Começa com o desembarque de Cristóvão Colombo na praia do Porto Santo, e prolonga-se por três dias com um mercado quinhentistas, teatralizações e desfiles. Avançando no calendário, para o mês de outubro, encontramos o Festival da Natureza. A celebração do extenso e rico património natural da ilha. Mais de 20% da Madeira é coberta por floresta Laurissilva, uma floresta milenar que integra a rede reservas europeias. Este festival promove e incentivo o contacto com ela, com um programa diversificado e para todas as idades: caminhadas, canyoning, nadar no oceano, a escalada, surf, montanhismo e btt. Depois temos Dezembro, com os festejos de Natal e Ano Novo a começarem logo no início do mês. As principais ruas do Funchal são decoradas a preceito com muita luz e cor. Há música, gastronomia e muita animação na baixa, que culmina a 23 de Dezembro, noite em que praticamente toda a Madeira converge para a zona do Mercado dos Lavradores, no Funchal. A Passagem de Ano é celebrada por toda a ilha, em hotéis, restaurantes, bares e até nas ruas, e à meia-noite, todos os olhos apontam o céu para espetacular fogo-de-artifício que ilumina a noite do Funchal. A beleza natural de uma ilha que oferece, ‘all year’ uma diversidade de atracções naturais, gastronómicas e de lazer. Sempre a temperaturas amenas, seja Verão, seja Inverno. Sempre com qualidade de serviço que só a Madeira, um dos destinos turísticos mais antigos do mundo, sabe oferecer.
