First victory for Steven Brown

Of the more than 37,000 spectators who attended Dom Pedro Victoria during the week, very few would have bet that the champion of the only Portuguese tournament on the European Tour would be Steven Brown.
The 32-year-old Englishman is far from a star. He started the week in the 150th position of the Dubai Race, was in serious danger of going down to the Challenge Tour, the European second division, and was only 550th on the world ranking.
He knew from the start of the € 1.5 million cash prize tournament that he could only remain on the European first division if he won the tournament or finished 2nd. Admittedly, he had put himself in a position to do so, as he set off for the last day three strokes from the leader, South African Brandon Stone, but he himself admitted that “nothing was expected from this.” At a glance he pocketed the 250,000 euro check, jumped to 69th place in the Dubai Race and not only ensured that he will remain in the European elite until the end of 2020, but also reached the limit for the millionaire Turkish Airlines Open, in November, reserved for the top-70 ranking of the European Tour, an event of the prestigious Rolex Series.
Steven Brown had never won a European Tour tournament. Closest - and very close - was the lost playoff with Englishman Matt Wallace at last year’s Made in Denmark. And this year he had not yet reached any top 10, although the previous week’s 11th place at the ever-complicated French Open gave the idea that his game was growing into shape.
It all came together perfectly on the last two days. On Saturday he shot a round of 65, 6 under Par, his best round of the season. And Sunday almost equaled it with a round at 66 (-5), for an aggregate of 267 (-17), given that on the first two days it had scores of 69 and 67.

O inglês de 32 anos está longe de ser uma estrela. Iniciou a semana no 150.º posto da Corrida para o Dubai, estava em sério risco de descer ao Challenge Tour, a segunda divisão europeia, e surgia apenas no 550.º lugar do ranking mundial.
Sabia desde o início do torneio de 1,5 milhões de euros em prémios monetários que só conseguiria manter-se na primeira divisão europeia se ganhasse o torneio ou se fosse 2.º classificado. É certo que tinha-se colocado em posição de consegui-lo, pois partiu para a última volta a três pancadas do líder, o sul-africano Brandon Stone, mas ele próprio admitiu que “não estava nada à espera disto”.
Num ápice embolsou o cheque de 250 mil euros, saltou para o 69.º lugar da Corrida para o Dubai e não só assegurou que irá continuar na elite europeia até ao final de 2020 como também se apurou no limite para o milionário Turkish Airlines Open, em novembro, reservado ao top-70 do ranking do European Tour, um evento da prestigiada Série Rolex.
Steven Brown nunca tinha ganho um torneio do European Tour. O mais perto – e bem perto – fora o ‘play-off perdido para o inglês Matt Wallace no Made in Denmark do ano passado. E este ano ainda não alcançara qualquer top-10, embora na semana passada o 11.º lugar no sempre complicado Open de França já desse a ideia de estar em crescendo de forma.
Tudo acabou por conjugar-se na perfeição nos dois últimos dias. No sábado arrancou uma penúltima volta em 65 pancadas, 6 abaixo do Par, o seu melhor cartão de toda a época. E domingo quase igualou-a com uma ronda em 66 (-5), para um agregado de

I’m in shock,” admitted Brown, who was the third player to get his maiden win at the Portugal Masters, after fellow countryman Tom Lewis in 2011 and Dane Lucas Bjerregaard in 2017. Brown beat by one stroke the South Africans Brandon Stone (rounds 66, 66, 66 and 70) and Justin Walters (65 + 66 + 71 + 66).
Among the Portuguese, it was a strange day. None played badly, but neither did they have one of those extraordinary rounds that could get them to the top. O britânico bateu por 1 única pancada os sul-africanos Brandon Stone (voltas de 66, 66, 66 e 70) e Justin Walters (65+66+71+66). Entre os portugueses, foi um dia estranho. Nenhum jogou mal, mas também nenhum conseguiu uma daquelas voltas extraordinárias que pudessem levá-los ao topo.

of 14,000 euros. Tiago Cruz was 40th, with a prize of 8,700 euros. Cruz went into the weekend well in the top-10, but a third round with three bogeys and a double saw him fall in the standings.
The other Portuguese missed the cut: Tomás Bessa (74 + 69), João Carlota (70 + 74), Daniel Rodrigues (70 + 75), Tomás Melo Gouveia (72 + 74), Miguel Gaspar (74 + 72), Pedro Figueiredo (73 + 76) and Pedro Silva (74 + 75). 29.º lugar com 276 pancadas, 8 abaixo do Par, merecendo um prémio de 14 mil euros. Tiago Cruz foi 40.º, com um prémio de 8.700 euros. Cruz, foi para o fim-de-semana bem dentro do top-10, mas uma terceira volta com três bogeys e um duplo, fizeram-lhe cair na classificação. Os restantes portugueses falharam o cut: Tomás Bessa (74+69), João Carlota (70+74), Daniel Rodrigues (70+75), Tomás Melo Gouveia (72+74), Miguel Gaspar (74+72), Pedro Figueiredo (73+76) e Pedro Silva (74+75).
