EUROPEN TOUR: QUALIFYING SCHOOL

Young Portuguese professionals Tomás Melo Gouveia, Tomás Silva and Tomás Bessa qualified for the second phase of the European Tour Qualifying School taking place on four Spanish courses.

The three Portuguese passed the first phase of the School that took place at Guardian Bom Sucesso, where 104 candidates were to enter the European circuit for 2020. Another seven Portuguese players failed to qualify. The first qualifying rounds took place in seven European countries (England, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, France and Portugal) and involved around 900 players from all continents with aspirations to win their European Tour access card. This qualification is considered one of the toughest and hardest tests in golf.

Players who pass the first two stages and reach the final will play 252 holes in total. The finals, which will be played by 156 players at Lumine GC (Tarragona) between November 15th and 20th, will be the toughest with six rounds with the top 25 (and ties) gaining access to the tour in 2020.

The Guardian Bom Sucesso (Caldas da Raínha) featured the Spanish “armada” with 23 players (including two Ballesteros, Javier and Manuel) and 19 Americans. The winner was Rodolfo Cazaubon Jr. with 277 strokes (11 under par).

The best Portuguese was Tomás Melo Gouveia who finished in 5th place with 281 (74-71-66-70), 7 under par. Tomas Santos Silva was 13th with 287 (74-72-71-70) and the last to qualify for the second round was Tomas Bessa in 17th place with 288 (71-72-69-76).

Also there were Miguel Gaspar, Tiago Rodrigues, StephenFerreira, João Carlota, Nathan Brader, Alexandre Abreu and the amateur João Pontes. These last three missing the cut for the last day.

Os jovens profissionais portugueses Tomás Melo Gouveia, Tomás Silva e Tomás Bessa apuraram-se para a segunda fase da Escola de Qualificação do European Tour a decorrer em quatro campos de Espanha. Os três Tomás lusos ultrapassaram a primeira fase da Escola que decorreu no Guardian Bom Sucesso, onde estiveram 104 candidatos a entrar no circuito europeu de 2020. Outros sete jogadores portugueses falharam o apuramento. A primeira fase da qualificação decorreu em sete países europeus (Inglaterra, Alemanha, Suécia, Áustria, Itália, França e Portugal) e envolveu cerca de 900 jogadores de todos os continentes com aspirações a ganhar o “cartão” de acesso ao tour europeu. Esta qualificação é considerada como um dos testes mais duros e difíceis no golfe. Os jogadores que ultrapassem as duas primeiras fases e cheguem à final vão disputar 252 buracos no total. A fase final, a disputar por 156 jogadores no Lumine GC (Tarragona) entre 15 e 20 de Novembro, será a mais dura com seis voltas e os 25 primeiros (e empatados) terão acesso ao tour em 2020.
