SPORT Sport’s role in preventing violent extremism discussed

In the continued cooperation and partnership between Qatar Charity (QC) and Qatar Airways (QA), an aircraft carrying 100 tons of food and medical supplies landed at the Khartoum Airport on Thursday. Qatar Charity, through its field office, began distributing the aid to the flood victims within the framework of the “Peace for Sudan” campaign.

The shipment consists of 70 tons of food aid provided by Qatar Charity, and 30 tons of food and medical assistance given by Monoprix Qatar and Talabat Qatar, in cooperation with Qatar Airways.

The plane was received at Khartoum Airport by the Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid in Sudan, His Excellency Abdul Rahman bin Ali Al-Kubaisi, the Qatari Ambassador to Sudan, and the director of Qatar Charity’s Sudan office Hussein Karmash. The Qatari aid aircraft departed from Doha in the presence of Mr. Yousef Al Kuwari, CEO of Qatar Charity, Mr. Akbar Al Baker, GCEO of Qatar Airways, and Mr. Abdulrahim Al Sediq, Ambassador of Sudan to Qatar.

The CEO of Qatar Charity Yusef bin Ahmed AlKuwari said, “Qatar Charity continues distributing relief aid to those affected by Sudan’s worst flooding in a century, aiming to reach the largest number of people most in need under the supervision of the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities (RACA).” He thanked the donors and Qatari bodies such as banks, companies, institutions, and media organizations who donated to or supported the campaign.

Al-Kuwari praised Qatar Airways for shipping the relief aid free of charge to Sudan, noting that it constantly extends such support during urgent humanitarian interventions, most recently after the massive explosion that has rocked the port area of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. He also pointed out that Qatar Airways provides support for Qatar Charity’s seasonal projects and social welfare programs, especially for orphans.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Sudan at this time. The devastating impact of the floods is being felt across the country, with hundreds of thousands of people affected. I have been touched by the large volume of donations from our employees and members of the public in Qatar who have come together as a community to support our brothers and sisters in Sudan. We hope that this community initiative, combined with our special cargo relief flight, will support as many people as possible and I thank our valuable partner Qatar Charity for their support in these efforts.”

Following the arrival of the Qatari aircraft with the relief aid, Mr. Hussein Karmash, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Sudan, said that the plan for the distribution of emergency relief aid is based on reaching out directly to the affected areas and delivering the support to eligible persons, after conducting a pre-survey, in coordination with the Humanitarian Aid Commission, to find out the areas most in need of urgent shelter and food aid.

He added that Qatar Charity has recently carried out many relief interventions in the affected areas of Khartoum State and the southern countryside of Omdurman, where the floods damaged large areas almost completely.

Karmash confirmed that Qatar Charity’s teams would carry out a campaign to deliver food and shelter assistance to the affected in the Nile River State in northern Sudan, and then carry out field intervention in Sennar State where homes and properties were largely damaged. He also pointed out that the aid distribution plan implemented by Qatar Charity is flexible, comprehensive for the affected areas, and responsive to urgent needs.

The director of Qatar Charity’s Sudan office said the projects of the first phase included the delivery of urgent food and shelter materials, primary health care services, and early recovery projects that include rehabilitating homes, schools, health centers, and water plants and wells.

He also indicated that the office would receive in the coming days other aircrafts carrying materials for shelters, health centers, and schools in the form of tents. He thanked Qatar Airways, Monoprix Qatar, and Talabat Qatar for their donation and support.
