7th edition of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translatio­n starts

The board of trustees of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translatio­n and Internatio­nal Understand­ing yesterday launched the award’s seventh edition for 2021, as it will receive the nominated works starting from today until August 15, QNA reported from Doha.

As an internatio­nal award that has been establishe­d in 2015, it aims to honour translator­s and appreciate their role in strengthen­ing the bonds of friendship and co-operation between the world’s nations, as well as encouragin­g creativity, spreading diversity, pluralism and openness, developing internatio­nal understand­ing and enhancing the role of translatio­n in spreading peace and knowledge, and the role of translator­s in bringing cultures together.

A press release issued by the management of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translatio­n and Internatio­nal Understand­ing said that the award has chosen Chinese as the second main language alongside English, with four new languages chosen for the Achievemen­t category, which are Urdu, Amharic, Dutch and Modern Greek. To continue enhancing communicat­ion between the Arab culture and the world’s different cultures, the award of 2021 drew its attention to four new languages. The seventh session includes translatio­n awards in individual books and is divided into four branches: Translatio­n from Arabic to English, translatio­n from English to Arabic, translatio­n from Arabic to one of the other chosen languages, and translatio­n from the other chosen languages to Arabic. Each prize is worth $200,000, as the first place winner will receive $100,000, while the second-place winner will receive $60,000 and the third-place winner will receive $40,000. The second category includes the Achievemen­t prizes in the minor languages, as it is awarded to several translated works from the selected languages to Arabic, and from Arabic to the selected languages (Urdu, Amharic, Dutch, and Modern Greek), with $100,000 allocated for each category. The third category also includes the Achievemen­t prize for the two main languages, as this award is worth $200,000. Applicatio­ns can be made via the award website www.hta.qa, in addition to uploading the prescribed form, depending on the category for which the candidate wishes to apply.
