As an international award that has been established in 2015, it aims to honour translators and appreciate their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and co-operation between the world’s nations, as well as encouraging creativity, spreading diversity, pluralism and openness, developing international understanding and enhancing the role of translation in spreading peace and knowledge, and the role of translators in bringing cultures together.
A press release issued by the management of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding said that the award has chosen Chinese as the second main language alongside English, with four new languages chosen for the Achievement category, which are Urdu, Amharic, Dutch and Modern Greek. To continue enhancing communication between the Arab culture and the world’s different cultures, the award of 2021 drew its attention to four new languages. The seventh session includes translation awards in individual books and is divided into four branches: Translation from Arabic to English, translation from English to Arabic, translation from Arabic to one of the other chosen languages, and translation from the other chosen languages to Arabic. Each prize is worth $200,000, as the first place winner will receive $100,000, while the second-place winner will receive $60,000 and the third-place winner will receive $40,000. The second category includes the Achievement prizes in the minor languages, as it is awarded to several translated works from the selected languages to Arabic, and from Arabic to the selected languages (Urdu, Amharic, Dutch, and Modern Greek), with $100,000 allocated for each category. The third category also includes the Achievement prize for the two main languages, as this award is worth $200,000.
