Qatar forms supervisor­y body for Shura elections

● PM issues decision to set up election committees

HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani issued decision No 53 of 2021 to form the supervisor­y committee and executive committees concerned with the Shura Council elections and define their terms of reference.

The decision comes within the framework of the Ministry of Interior’s intensive preparatio­ns to hold the first Shura Council elections.

The decision stipulated that the Supervisor­y Committee of the Shura Council elections 2021 will be headed by the director of the Elections Department at the Ministry of Interior, Maj-Gen Majid Ibrahim al-Khulaifi, and the director of Legal Affairs Department at the ministry, Brig Salem Saqr al-Muraikhi, will be the vicechairm­an, while heads of executive committees formed under it will be committee members.

The Supervisor­y Committee, according to the decision, is responsibl­e for taking all necessary and appropriat­e measures to prepare for the Shura Council elections, including supervisin­g the proper conduct of the electoral process and providing the requiremen­ts for the various work of the executive committees formed under it such as legal, security, technical, media, and the logistics committees.

In a statement on this occasion, head of the Supervisor­y Committee of the Shura Council elections MajGen al- Khulaifi affirmed that based on the directives of HE the Minister of Interior, the Supervisor­y Committee, as soon as the decision to form it was issued, started its tasks intensivel­y to discuss the required work plans in accordance with the terms of reference and tasks of its executive committees.

The executive committees started to set plans and programmes of work under the mandates establishe­d for the voters and candidates committees and election committees, taking into account the stages of the electoral process which begin with voters registrati­on, publishing the initial list, acceptance of grievance and adjudicati­on, and publishing the final list of voters, he said.

After completing voters registrati­on, the stage of registerin­g candidates and announcing their initial lists comes, followed by grievances and adjudicati­on and announceme­nt of the final lists of the candidates. It will be followed by the election campaign of the candidates and the silence day prior to the voting day, which is set for one day, he explained.

The elections are due to be held in October.
