Merkel stresses German-French unity in post-corona EU recovery

-

MESEBERG: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stressed German-French unity in reconstructing the EU economy following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron near Berlin.

“When Germany and France are united, that does not mean that Europe is united. But when Germany and France are not united, then Europe’s unity is not in a very good state,” Merkel said.

“Expectations are high,” Merkel said in reference to Germany’s pending presidency of the EU that begins on July 1, but Berlin and Paris could make a contribution to a “positive impulse in the right direction for Europe’s future.” Merkel said that Europe was facing difficult times, and that the two countries intended to play a role over the months ahead that made clear: “Europe is our future.”
