Duda wins Polish presidential vote, but now faces tough run-off

-

WARSAW: Incumbent President Andrzej Duda won the first round of Poland’s presidential election at the weekend, but will face a tough run-off against Warsaw’s liberal mayor in a deeply polarised country.

According to results from 99.8 percent of constituencies, Duda garnered 43.7 percent of the vote, the state electoral commission PKW announced on Monday. Duda’s main rival, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, won 30.3 percent.

Since no candidate reached the 50-per-cent plus one vote majority required to secure the presidency in the first round held on Sunday, the two men will face each other in a run-off on July 12. The Duda-Trzaskowski run-off will be a fourth consecutive presidential run-off featuring candidates from PiS and PO.
