300 entries from 42 countries registered for 6th Sheikh Hamad Translatio­n Award

THE Board of Trustees of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translatio­n and Internatio­nal Understand­ing announced on Thursday that the steering committee has completed the preliminar­y screening of the submission­s for the sixth edition of the award in 2020.

The committee said the number of entries exceeded 300 from 42 Arab and foreign countries, received from individual­s and institutio­ns concerned with translatio­n.

Dr Hanan Al Fayyad, media spokespers­on for the award, said in a statement that this edition has seen more participan­ts than the last one in which 234 competed, which bears testimony to the award’s success in achieving its mission of cultural and knowledge communicat­ion at the global level.

She added that the winners will be announced on December 12, noting that the participan­ts in this year’s edition are from Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey, Iran, Afghanista­n, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sweden, Netherland­s, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, the United States, Britain and South Korea.

Sheikh Hamad Award for

Translatio­n and Internatio­nal Understand­ing was founded in Doha in 2015. It is an internatio­nal prize run by a board of trustees, a steering committee and independen­t panels of judges.

The total value of the award is $2m. The award seeks to honour translator­s and acknowledg­e their role in strengthen­ing the bonds of friendship and cooperatio­n among peoples and nations of the world.
