QC and UPEACE University sign agreement to provide grant for doctoral students
QATAR Charity (QC) has signed an agreement with the University for Peace of the United Nations (UPEACE University) to provide financial support to doctoral students of Somalia. The scholarships will enable the students to pursue their studies in their own research fields and contribute to building the Somali state.
The agreement was signed by Prof Samuel Kali, regional director Africa at UPEACE University, and Abdel Fattah Adam Muallem, director of QC’s office in Somalia, in the presence of Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education of Somalia Farah Sheikh Abdul Qadir, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ishaq Mahmoud Mursal, and Ambassador of Qatar to Somalia.
In a statement on this occasion, Farah Sheikh Abdul Qadir, Somali Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, said: This agreement is part of the presidential grant announced by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud. As a result of this grant, over the next three years, more than 100 Somali researchers from the university will be granted free PhD studies.”
The minister explained, “QC has become the first organization that has enabled the president to fulfill this promise, as the charity has signed a grant for 40 Somali researchers. This grant is open to every Somali citizen who has the required qualifications.”
Farah expressed his thanks and appreciation to QC for its vital interventions in all sectors. He also expressed his sincere thanks to Qatar and the strong fraternal relations between the two countries.
Prof Samuel Kali said: “The cooperation agreement in the field of education with Qatar Charity aims to harness the intellectual potential of Somalia and contribute to the country’s sustainable development. This will be achieved through a range of academic disciplines that serve the security and peace-building process while equipping students with valuable skills. The agreement also enhances the spirit of innovation among students.”
Abdel Fattah Adam Muallem said: “Qatar Charity pays special attention to the education process in Somalia, as it seeks to contribute to building a brighter future for Somali generations. Qatar Charity has been working in Somalia for several years and has provided support to the education sector, including for building and renovating schools, providing scholarships to Somali students, supporting teacher training programmes, and providing educational materials and supplies.”
