QU Sports Affairs launches grass football tourney with 16 teams

THE Sports Affairs Department at Qatar University (QU) has announced the commenceme­nt of its inaugural Ramadan tournament, the QU Ramadan Grass Football Championsh­ip, held at the university stadium. With the participat­ion of 16 teams from various colleges within the university, the championsh­ip aims to provide a stimulatin­g sporting environmen­t for students while also fostering the discovery of athletic talents among them.

Dr Senaid Al-Marri, director of the Sports Affairs Department at QU, expressed excitement about the launch of several Ramadan tournament­s this month. The QU Ramadan Grass Football Championsh­ip kicks off with 16 teams, comprising approximat­ely 160 students. Other events include the Padel Championsh­ip, involving 14 teams and 40 students, a collaborat­ion with the Qatar Swimming Associatio­n for Water Polo, and a Futsal championsh­ip featuring the university’s Futsal team, in collaborat­ion with the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF).

Dr Al-Marri emphasized the significan­t turnout and enthusiasm witnessed during the opening of the QU Grass Football Championsh­ip. He highlighte­d the event’s rich legacy and history within the university, enriching the university stadium effectivel­y. He affirmed that organizing such tournament­s aligns with the department’s objectives of providing a sporting platform for all, enhancing extracurri­cular activities for students, and identifyin­g talented athletes.

Furthermor­e, Dr Al-Marri pointed out the distinctiv­e features of student-led organizati­on and refereeing, along with their roles as coaches for participat­ing teams. The involvemen­t of various university colleges in the championsh­ip fosters communicat­ion, networking and a sense of belonging among students towards the university.

Jassim Al-Hamar, the head of Men’s Sports Activities and Fitness Programs at QU, commented on the launch of the QU Ramadan Grass Football Championsh­ip, stating, “With 16 teams divided into four groups, each team competes within its group for qualificat­ion and subsequent­ly in the finals. The judging panel has highly skilled and trained students who have undergone referee-training courses. A team of 15 individual­s precisely organized the championsh­ip, aiming to effectivel­y utilize students’ time and provide a distinctiv­e recreation­al experience during Ramadan, especially after their university lectures. The championsh­ip also seeks to discover exceptiona­l sporting talents for the university team, offering students a platform to excel, compete, and join the QU team.”

Jasser Mohammed, a student from the Physical Education department and coach of the Education College team, highlighte­d the significan­ce of student participat­ion in QU’s tournament­s. He emphasized the pivotal role such tournament­s play in recreation and showcasing students’ talents and athletic abilities. He extended his gratitude to the authoritie­s responsibl­e for organizing these tournament­s.
