Countering hatemongers
This is with reference to the article “America after the election” (Oct. 26) by Richard N. Haass. I do agree with the writer that the 2016 US presidential election have not only bitterly divided the American society but it has also exposed many problems that the once land of opportunities is currently facing. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump should not be treated as an individual, he represents a mentality that is fast growing in the US and other parts of the entire West. I would blame the mainstream media for fanning hatred in society. In the post 9/11 era, the media played a very negative role and through its biased reporting of events, it created a bogey of Muslims living in the West. In addition to the media, many populist elements in politics also made use of this opportunity and stoked tensions among people of different communities for their vested interest.
Whether or not Trump wins, the mentality needs to be tackled at all levels. It is the responsibility of all sane elements — media people, teachers, intellectuals and politicians — to take charge of the situation by reaching out to people to explain them the ground realities. People need to be educated on these issues. Peace-loving people should swing into action to prevent hatemongers from spreading their hatred in society. These elements have already done enough damage to the US and other parts of the world. It is high time we all took concrete actions to rein in these elements and spread the message of peace and love.
