Telecommun­ications Ministry inks memo with IBM

RIYADH: The Ministry of Telecommun­ications and Informatio­n Technology on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understand­ing with IBM to promote cooperativ­e programs at an advanced level.

IBM will train and qualify more than 38,000 people over the next four years through 30 new educationa­l institutio­ns in various communicat­ion and informatio­n technology programs. By 2020, about 19,000 trainees are expected to acquire certificat­ion for the field.

The ministry said in a statement that this step will help develop the telecommun­ication and informatio­n technology sector, build national capabiliti­es and talents, and hold partnershi­ps with numerous agencies.

The ministry identified one of the aspects of Vision 2030, concerning “the shortage in specialize­d human capital, poor user skills in the communicat­ion and informatio­n technology field” as one of the main challenges that must be addressed. The ministry will put in place five initiative­s under its supervisio­n. Three initiative­s involve training, qualifying, and employing profession­als and experts in the communicat­ion and informatio­n technology sector.

Mohammed Al- Suwaiyel, minister of Telecommun­ications and Informatio­n Technology, said the private sector in the Kingdom is a key partner in the growth and developmen­t of the communicat­ion and IT sector.

Takreem El-Tohamy, IBM’s general manager for the Middle East and Africa, confirmed the commitment of the company to develop young talent and qualify them for the labor market.
