I.D. Crozz — car of the future
VW has previously unveiled two concepts, the I.D. and the I.D.Buzz and it now follows with the third member of the I.D. family. The new generation has all zero-emission vehicles with a long driving range and a new interior design for an electricmobility world.
The Crozz is a glimpse of the future that offers consumers a range of 500 km/h on a single charge. The highperformance battery can be charged to 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes using a fast-charging system.
The Crozz switches over to a fully autonomous ‘I.D. Pilot’ mode when the driver touches the VW badge on
the steering wheel for 3 seconds. Important information is projected into the driver’s visual field by augmented reality. Gesture control will play a prominent role. A new light shade in the transparent panoramic sunroof is even activated by gesture control; the shade
offers a new form of interior and exterior ambient lighting. Meanwhile, a new CleanAir system guarantees good air quality in the vehicle — in all outdoor conditions. The Crozz will run two electric motors with a combined output equivalent to 302 bhp and claims acceleration to 100km/h in 6 seconds. The front axle carries one motor with an output of 101 bhp and a second larger motor on the rear axle produces 201 bhp. Drive is channeled to the respective axels through two fixed-ratio gearboxes and an electric “prop shaft” that is capable of transferring power between the two axles according to grip and traction. Energy powering the two engines is stored in an 83Wh battery mounted within the floor. The range is set at 311 miles, which is 115 miles more than the facelifted e-Golf. The Crozz offers the option between manual mode and autonomous driv- ing. In the manual mode, a LED light graphic within the front section of the roof is illuminated in blue. In autonomous driving, the LED light graphic changes into violet color.
At the same time, four laser scanners integrated into the four corners of the roof are deployed to enable the car to detect other road users in coordination with other proximity technology including ultrasonic and radar sensors.
This concept was unveiled at Shanghai Auto Show this year. VW aims this future creation at consumers with active lifestyles. The interior design is similar to previous I.D. concepts with a hexagonal steering wheel that recedes into the dashboard when the I.D. pilot is engaged.
Some of the latest technologies used in the car include augmented reality and head- up display. The Crozz is more compact than VW’s latest production sport utility vehicle (SUV), the New Tiguan L (in China) or the Tiguan Allspace (in Europe). And yet the CUV provides just as much space. This is because the Crozz is based on the new, next-generation architecture for VW electric vehicles. The suspension and drivetrain modules are positioned to the far sides of the vehicle and exhibit very compact construction.
The seat configuration offers high flexibility. It creates space that can be put to optimal use — a generously proportioned and newly designed “Open Space,” which exceeds typical class standards. Want to take your bike away with you for the weekend without having to mount a cycle rack? Simply slide it crosswise into the rear seating area.
Klaus Bischoff, VW design chief, sums up his vision of the I.D. Crozz by saying: “If it were ever possible to make a 100 percent prediction of what the future will look like, it is achieved here.”
Production of the I.D. range will start in 2020.
Volkswagen (VW) is working on a strategy to produce 1 million electric cars annually by 2025, according to its CEO Herbert Diess. One of these cars, the I.D. Crozz, will play a key role in this strategy. The Crozz is a four- door crossover utility vehicle with its own autopilot system.
