Vision 2030 empowers digital economy to support ICT projects

RIYADH: The World Telecommun­ication Developmen­t Conference (WTDC) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, organized by the Internatio­nal Telecommun­ication Union (ITU), concluded on Tuesday, where Saudi Arabia chaired one of the conference’s five most important committees to define the scope of the ITU telecommun­ication developmen­t sector.

“For so long, the Saudi government has been aware of the importance of the ICT sector, which empowers the digital economy that supports ICT projects as part of the Vision 2030,” said Majid bin Mohammed Al-Mazyad, deputy governor of the Communicat­ion and Informatio­n Technology Commission for infrastruc­ture and technology, and head of the Saudi delegation.

Al-Mazyad demonstrat­ed some of Vision 2030’s programs that have relevant strategic goals. These include: Infrastruc­ture developmen­t, advancing broadband solutions and promoting advanced technologi­es.

“The Saudi ICT market is the region’s largest telecommun­ications market,” he said. “Around $35 billion was spent on telecommun­ications and informatio­n technology services in 2016, with a growth rate of more than 8 percent compared to 2015.”

The WTDC is one of the main conference­s of the ITU and is held once every four years. This year, more than 1,400 experts from 134 countries participat­ed in the conference. innovation in
