The renowned Palestinia­n translator Saleh Almani died on Tuesday. He was 70 years old.

Almani’s son-in-law Jo Bazlamit announced the news through a Facebook post. “With deep sorrow, I announce that I received this morning the news of the death of my fatherin-law Saleh Almani, the great translator in Spain, may God accept him in His mercy,” Bazlamit wrote.

Almani spent the last years of his life as a refugee in Madrid. He was particular­ly well-known for his translatio­n of Latin American literature, including Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s seminal novel “100 Years of Solitude.” He translated over 100 novels and books by the some of the most prominent Latin

Ballet Flamenco De Madrid is bringing “Carmen” into the Cairo Opera House. The ballet, in which French composer Geroges Bizet composed the music, tells the story of a beautiful gypsy named Carmen. The show runs until Dec. 8.

•Works

of Berlin-based artist Bani Abidi is exhibited at the Arts Square in Sharjah’s Bait Al Serkal. Called authors including Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Federico García Lorca, Isabel Allende, Jose Saramago and Jorge Luis Borges.

Almani was born in Homs, Syria, in

1949 and studied Spanish literature. His translatio­ns have been published across the Arab world and he received numerous awards and honors for his work. @Poet_Hadi tweeted in reaction to the sad news, “Now, Marquis died twice!” @MohamedAAt­tia tweeted, “Any translator or linguist working with the Arabic language should always intend to leave a legacy the standard of which was set by the great Saleh Almani.” @a7madfat7y wrote, “Saleh Almani… the renowned author and translator… is the person who introduced me to Latin America literature and to my favorite author

(Saramago).”

“Funland,” the exhibition explores the artist’s practice over two decades and a focus on the art scene of 1990s Karachi. It ends on Jan. 12

exhibition “Picasso et la famille” remains on view at the Sursock Museum in Beirut, with the support of the Musee national Picasso-Paris and with the collaborat­ion of the Lebanese Ministry of Culture.
