Saudi students get taste of fast fashion with special project Detailed report

- Ruba Obaid Jeddah

A group of Saudi female students at Princess Nourah University in Riyadh have unveiled a special clothing project with fashion brand Rina. Work on the 17-piece collection started in January, while the project was revealed on Saudi National Day. The clothing was inspired by the streets, traffic, architecture, lights, nature and lifestyle that Riyadh offers.

The five fashion design students chose a new take on typical National Day designs. Instead of using the color green and traditional prints, they created a diverse range of practical, modern designs with a Saudi twist.

“We learned many new things that we didn’t know before during our studies. It was an enlightening experience,” said Maha AlQumayzi, a member of the group. “I believe big dreams have small beginnings, and these beginnings are what actually make us the people we want to be.”

The collection is split into two parts. The first is the “Open Circle,” which are functional pieces designed for day-to-day use. The other section, “Weekend in Riyadh,” includes nightwear items that stand out in the bustling nightlife of the capital.

Abdul Aziz Al-Abdulkarim, board member of the Rina brand and owner of Al-Abdul Karim & Co., said the project looked to give back to the community and celebrate National Day by showing the talent and hard work of young Saudis. “Rina gave the students a great opportunity to experience the life of a professional designer,” he said.
