‘Sunset in Palmyra’ Ahmad Madoun

The late painter was hugely inspired by his birthplace, Palmyra, and much of his work incorporates its rich cultural heritage — you will often see ancient ruins in his paintings. “Palmyra … enriches my artistic sensibilities,” he once wrote. ‘Untitled’ Randa Maddah

The auction will include over 50 works from contemporary Syrian artists including Maddah, whose art deals with themes of exile, homeland and memory and often features bodies and landscapes “that have been warped by the weight of experience and are heavy with psychological burdens,” according to the brochure.
