Sir Sean Connery, the legendary icon of the silver screen and long-time heartthrob, passed away on Saturday afternoon at the age of 90.
Despite being known for his unforgettable cinematic career, Connery came from humble origins. He left school at 13 with no qualifications, performing odd jobs before joining the Royal Navy. When he was eventually invalided out of service, he opted to try his luck at a career on the stage, eventually making his name in the 1957 BBC film “Blood Money.” From, there his career took off. The actor is best known for his role as James Bond in seven of the series’ films and for being the first person to portray the suave, dashing spy in some of the franchise’s most successful films. Daniel Craig, the current Bond, said: “He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in megawatts; he helped create the modern blockbuster ... Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course.”
Sam Neill, Connery’s co-star in The Hunt for Red October, said: “Every day on set with #SeanConnery was an object lesson in how to act on screen. But all that charisma and power — that was utterly unique to Sean. RIP that great man, that great actor.”
