On Monday, Netflix released a documentary movie about 22-year-old singer Shawn Mendes titled “Shawn Mendes: In Wonder.”
The documentary pulls back the curtain on Mendes’ personal life like never before, with the singer reflecting on his journey to fame, sharing neverbefore-seen childhood videos, opening up about his relationship with Camila Cabello, and sharing the struggles he went through.
“This is a story about a guy growing up — not the story of a pop star,” director Grant Singer said in a statement, adding that the filming process was approached in such a way as to give viewers the feeling of being close to Mendes. “I wanted to capture a feeling that was heartfelt and exhilarating and allowed the viewer an intimate access to him and the world in which he lives,” he said. The movie opens with Mendes discovering his love for music and follows him from his days on the now-defunct app Vine, doing covers of songs, to performing in front of 20,000plus fans. Mendes said that Cabello, 23, a former member of Fifth
Harmony and Mendes’ current partner, was one of the reasons for his success, from the moment they became friends in 2016 to the present. “She was always there to look out for me as a human being. She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner is for,” he said. At the end of the movie, Mendes teased fans by offering glimpses as to what the future holds for his music career, including his soon-to-be-released album, “Wonder.”
Mendes’ fans used the hashtag #InWonderWatchParty to shower the singer with support.
