The Nigerian superstar, Sound Sultan, died on Sunday at the age of 44 of lymphoma.

The news was announced in a statement signed by Dr. Kayode Fasasi on behalf of the Fasasi family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our multitalen­ted veteran singer, rapper, songwriter Olanrewaju Fasasi aka Sound Sultan,” read the statement.

“He passed away at the age of 44 following a hard-fought battle with Angioimmun­oblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.”

Sultan, whose real name is Olanrewaju Fasasi, was a rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and comedian.

His work discussed societal issues such as bad education, corruption, incompeten­ce and poverty. He also challenged and criticized political leaders in his work.

In May, news circulated that Sultan had been diagnosed with cancer and was in the US undergoing treatment, which had many fans and well-wishers saying prayers for his speedy recovery through social media posts.

Reacting at the time, the singer shared on Instagram, saying: “I must not ignore the massive show of love. Thank you all. I will tell you my story myself it will be true then not false.”

Sultan was trending worldwide on Twitter, as fans and well-wishers paid tribute to him on the platform.
