Saudi-American ‘Protection Shield 4’ exercise begins
Drills will enhance collaboration between forces of both countries
Saudi Arabia and the US have begun a military exercise “Protection Shield 4” in Dhahran, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.
The participants include the Saudi Armed Forces, US Central Command and several civilian and military entities. These include the Ministry of Defense’s health services, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority.
Col. Turki bin Salem Al-Sumairi, who is overseeing the drill, said the exercises would enhance collaboration between Saudi Arabia and US forces. The
aim is to heighten awareness of chemical, biological and nuclear risks.
Several simulations will be conducted to prepare for the possible deployment of weapons of mass destruction.
The health services units from the participating entities were also involved in the preparations. Last year, the Royal Saudi Navy and China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy held a joint military exercise in Zhanjiang. Code-named Blue Sword 3, the three-week exercise intended to build mutual trust, enhance cooperation between the two navies and exchange experiences in combating maritime terrorism and piracy.
The exercise focused on “overseas maritime counterterrorism operations,” including sniping, boat driving, helicopter landing and joint rescues, China’s Ministry of National Defense said in a statement.
