The game of chess is thought to have evolved from a four-sided game played with dice and a board. The original game, called Chaturanga, originated in India, and was used to teach military tactics. After some time, it was simplified into a two-player strategy contest. Chess spread to Persia, Arabia, and finally into Europe in the 8th century by way of the Moorish occupation of Spain and Portugal.
