Jacques Pépin, 81, first apprentice­d in a kitchen at 13. He trained in Paris before leaving for the United States, where he fell in love with New York and got a job at Le Pavillon, one of the best French restaurant­s of that time. He also had a long-running column in The New York Times and won an Emmy for a television series he recorded with Julia Child called Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home.
