Jac­ques Pépin, 81, first ap­pren­ticed in a kitchen at 13. He trained in Paris be­fore leav­ing for the United States, where he fell in love with New York and got a job at Le Pav­il­lon, one of the best French restau­rants of that time. He also had a long-run­ning col­umn in The New York Times and won an Emmy for a tele­vi­sion se­ries he recorded with Ju­lia Child called Ju­lia and Jac­ques Cook­ing at Home.
