Jean-Claude Duvalier

A er Francois Duvalier died, his son JeanClaude “Baby Doc” Duvalier succeeded him as President of Haiti in 1971. Duvalier was not interested in governing and le the job to his mother and a commi ee. Following an initial referendum

“suppo ed” by 99.9 per cent of the population, Duvalier was made president for life. While he lived in luxury, his mother and government made cosmetic reforms but proceeded to siphon away millions of dollars from the country. In 1985, a er suffering 15 years of neglect and abuse, Haitians ousted and exiled the Duvaliers.

Najib Razak

The former Malaysian premier lost power when his Barisan Nasional Pa y garnered only 79 out of 222 seats in the 2018 elections. Najib was then charged with criminal breach of trust and abuse of power by the new government. His rule was marked by economic liberation measures, corruption and the 1MDB scandal, as well as the suppressio­n of political opponents. Living costs soared and because of the fallout from 1MDB, the value of the Malaysian ringgit depreciate­d greatly. All the while his wife flaunted an extravagan­t lifestyle.
