What exactly is scoliosis and can it treated by a chiropractor?

-

Scoliosis is an often-mentioned spinal condition where the spine curves sideways, usually in an “S” shape with the convex to the right in the upper back and to the left in the lower back. It becomes evident during the growth spurt before puberty. Though many cases of scoliosis are mild, severe scoliosis can be disabling.

If left uncorrected over time, scoliosis will worsen, leading to back pain, headache and posture-related disorders. In rare, severe cases, it can reduce the amount of space in the chest making it difficult to take a deep breath, causing a shortness-of-breath feeling even at rest. But, if caught at a young age, there’s a good chance the child or young adult will “grow out” of the condition. Therefore, parents should monitor their children for the condition. Symptoms of scoliosis may include uneven shoulders, one shoulder blade appearing more prominently than the other, uneven waist or one hip higher on one side.

Preventive chiropractic care can spot scoliosis early on. In the Gonstead Method of chiropractic, a full spinal x-ray is taken before any chiropractic adjustments are made, and the Gonstead chiropractor evaluates for a number of potential causes such as leg length discrepancy, subluxation, upper neck mechanical problems and vertebral malformation. A Gonstead chiropractor will also provide information on exercises and a specific chiropractic plan to suit the individual.
