The Silk Seller

- BY KEL FLANDERS

Why did you decide to launch your business?

After talking to the naturopath, I bought some silk bedding, but I was never really happy with it. Then I found Wink Silk, and I loved the products so much that I offered to buy the brand and the business. That was October last year, and I’ve never looked back!

Has using Wink Silk sheets and pillowcases made a difference with the asthma?

Since starting to use them last year, my three children have had (at the most) one asthma attack between them. This is instead of the almost monthly visits to the doctor we had before Wink Silk.

There must have been challenges over the past year?

Yes! I work mainly from home and I find that when my kids are around I struggle to get down to actually working. Typical of working mums everywhere, I think.

Marketing and getting the word out about Wink Silk’s amazing products has also been challenging. Not because the products aren’t great, but I’m very “old school” when it comes to social media and all that.

So, all the support and exposure we can get is very much appreciated, including the Expat Living community!

Do you love running your own business?

Absolutely. I love the freedom of being able to work wherever I am, and working towards the goals I’ve set for myself. I was told I wouldn’t be able to run a business, let alone own one. Being able to prove the naysayers wrong was my initial motivation. It also means that, as a single mum, I’m still able to look after my kids independently and work. I can take time out and spend time with them, too.

I also love that they contribute to the business by helping with the packaging and the stacking! This gives us all something to do as a family and it makes my kids learn the value of hard work.

We’ve just started using a fulfilment company, but right before we did we had to pack everything ourselves. Imagine the scene: I had my six-year-old putting the boxes together, my ten-year-old wrapping the items in acid paper and putting them in the boxes, and my seven-year-old adding the care cards then stacking the boxes for the fulfilment company to pick up. It was like a home assembly line and it was fun. We talked and bonded a lot as a family, and it gave them a sense of contributing towards something purposeful.

Do you have any new products coming up?

We now offer king-sized pillowcases and full bedsheet sets. I’m also looking to do a bedroom scent line with candles, soaps and diffusers in the near future.
