Buying Meat:

-

A butchery with a family focus

Did you know that Huber's Butchery stocks more than 30 types of sausages, most of which are gluten-free? “Our raw sausages don't contain added chemicals, preservatives or fillers,” says Andre. “They're also made with sea salt, not iodised salt.”

This same thread runs through the whole Huber's inventory. The products are made with high-quality raw materials; think hormone- and antibiotic-free meat, marinated with fresh imported spices. No chemicals are used, and preservatives are either omitted or kept at a minimum, which means the shelf life for the meats is often much lower than commercially made products.

Traditional methods are favoured at here, too. For example, the bacon is soaked in a brine for one full week. Andre explains that commercially produced bacon only requires a day to make, as chemicals are usually injected or pumped into the meat to hold more water. That's why Huber's bacon tends to be less salty and more flavourful; less water comes out from the bacon during cooking, which results in less shrinkage.

Top-notch machinery from Switzerland and Germany is used for the meat preparation process. This ensures that each product is consistent; for example, order some ham and you'll get it to your preferred thinness and sliced precisely, rather than falling apart.

Shopping tips: What to buy

Cooking for the family, or getting a few friends over for a barbecue? There's a huge variety of meats on offer at Huber's to satisfy all kinds of menus and recipes. We've already mentioned the sausages – these range from the classic Germanstyle pork sausage and Spanish-style sausage with smoked paprika to a yummy-sounding Thai-style pork sausage flavoured with lemongrass and ginger. You'll also find marinated steaks for easyweeknight meals, cold cuts for platters and lamb racks for roasting. Andre says that the team goes through rounds of testing to get the right texture and flavour for each item in the store, so if you're looking impress your guests, you can count on the standard of products here.

On top of meats, Huber's also offers a selection of homemade items like rillette, pâté, and steak butter, so you can raise your kitchen game to the next level. Some are made to a secret family recipe; others focus on the simple and the traditional – the pesto, for example, features just six high-quality ingredients: basil, parmesan, pine nuts, garlic, extra virgin olive oil and sea salt.

Andre says that the store's approach means their products are healthier than most commercial counterparts, too, as no filler or MSG is used. “We're guided by the principle that we're making food for our families and children,” he says. “So we try to ensure the products are as wholesome and nourishing as possible.”

Sounds like it's time to fire up the barbecue! 22 Dempsey Road
