Little Rockers “What’s next for my kid?”

Does your child dream of being in a band?

- BY JESS SMIT

If School of Rock is a favourite in your household, you’ll definitely want to find out more about this boutique music school in Singapore that’s putting a fresh new spin on traditional lessons and bringing young talent together for team band practice!

“Learning how to play an instrument individually is one thing, but learning how to play with other instruments in a band is where the real magic happens,” says Zi, director and founder of Arrows Music and a professional musician himself.

Based in a heritage shophouse in Chinatown, the group-based music lessons teach junior virtuosos from the age of five the fundamentals of working as a band, and are guided by experienced and professional facilitators, each one a regular in Singapore’s music scene. Students can expect to be grouped together according to their instrument of choice and their ability (with bands suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced).

Up-and-coming musicians will also get a real taste of what a professional setting is like – while protecting their ears from the loudest tracks at the same time, as the studio is equipped with state-of-the-art Ear Monitoring systems!

According to Zi, so many parents used to ask this question once their child progressed to a certain level during private teaching lessons. This was the catalyst for starting Arrows Music.

“There reaches a point where chasing the traditional grades in music just reaches a stalemate,” says Zi. “Some of the greatest lessons in life have come from being in a band and learning how to work with other musicians.”

Way beyond simply helping your child learn to jam in harmony, the collaborative band-based lessons expose students to aspects that conventional music lessons miss out on. From leading a band rehearsal to interacting with children playing different instruments and being part of something larger than themselves, being in a band opens doors to so many valuable life skills such as teamwork, social skills, responsibility, confidence, creativity and leadership.

Encore! Choosing the right instrument

Introducing your child to music is a gift that will last a lifetime, but it can be tricky to settle on an instrument. While there really is no golden rule in deciding which to go for, Arrow Music’s “Find an Instrument” three-month course (12 lessons) is the perfect platform for beginners, with one-on-one lessons that let you dabble in your choice of three specialties, from drums and keyboard, to guitar, bass guitar and vocals.
