WHAT’S YOUR CALL TO ACTION?
SUPPORTERS TELL US HOW THEY PLAN TO RAISE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.
artwork. “But this is not the only thing you can do.”
As we spoke to survivors and supporters who’ve been working with PCC, BCF and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO), we discovered many ways to monitor our health.
“Women should have mammograms and screenings from 40 years old, not 45,” Caroline said. Three-time breast cancer survivor, Esther Sim, mentioned the benefits of exercise: “Going to the gym regularly releases toxins, raises endorphins and provides you with a positive outlook.” Tania Schnuppe, who had a mastectomy of her right breast, felt that “keeping your stress levels low and banishing negative thoughts is the best way of preservation”. Survivor Lenny Kasim advised skipping hawker centre fare for more nutritious food, and survivor Tan Lay Har warned that “you must also check your armpits”.
While sharing drinks, nibbles and wisdom with these wonderful women, we asked attendees of our event and members of the public to bid for Adeline’s 3-D artwork and buy pink ribbons – and the $1,500 raised went to BCF. People also showed support by taking pictures with our Bare for Hope pledge card. With every 10 pictures posted and tagged on Instagram, PCC would sponsor a mammogram for underprivileged women at SCWO’s Star Shelter.
Noor summed up the positive mood of the event by saying: “Together as one, we can fight for a cure and better survival rates. Just by showing support, you have taken the first three letters from cancer and provided the word that keeps us fighting – ‘CAN’.”
