When it comes to other watches, ask before you sell.

-

IS MY WATCH STILL IN DEMAND? Do a quick Google search of your watch model to see if there’s any interest. Comb legitimate forums to check if other sellers are having any luck selling similar timepieces. HOW MUCH CAN IT FETCH? Go online to see the range of prices people are willing to pay. “Today, the market is so open that you can see multiple prices being quoted for the watch that you are planning to sell,” says Desmond Pang, owner of K.B. Luxury Watch & Jewellery. “From there, you can establish the price that you are comfortable selling it at.”

But to drill down to the details, you should consult a professional. “Every watch has a threshold that depends on its demand at a certain point in time, and it’s difficult to nd out the exact gure online. It’s preferable to ask a store,” says Nicholas Lim, executive director of Chuan Watch.

To fetch the best price, the watch should still be in good condition and come with all its parts. “For a Rolex sports model, you could get as much as $1,000 less if you don’t have the box,” says Pang. No box and no papers of authenticity mean you can’t prove you’re selling genuine goods. TO SELL ONLINE OR IN A STORE? To sell online, you’ll have to scout for an appropriate website, create a post, engage with prospective buyers and eventually complete the sale.

“If you choose to sell online, the safer options are probably the forums, such as www.sgrolexclub. com or www.swx.com. sg,” advises Pang. “Make sure you check that a site is legitimate – see if there are multiple posts, and if the members appear to be genuine watch enthusiasts. Check if they have been contributing to discussions, or have previously sold items. Some forums also have a rating system where people exchange feedback on sellers.”

Selling online is likely to fetch you a higher price than if you were to head to a store – which absorbs more to cover overheads. But the store route has perks too – a buy-back policy, and a yearlong warranty.
