How to kick-start your next career move

To ensure that the move aligns with your personal and professional goals, it’s important to understand your motivations first.

Are you considering a career change? You’re not alone. According to a recent global survey by recruitment agency Apollo Technical, 32 per cent of those aged between 25 and 44 have considered a career change in 2023.

However, a career change is an important undertaking, and not one to be taken on a whim, says Olga Valadon, a career strategist and founder of leadership, strategy and culture consultancy Change Aligned.

Whether you are changing industries, moving from full-time to freelance work, or pursuing an entrepreneurship, here are three key questions to ask yourself:

Why are you driving this career change?

Utilise assessment tools to gain a more objective perspective. Even taking personality assessments, such as Myers-Briggs or DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness), can help you understand your preferred work style and environment.

You could also conduct a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis for both your current career and potential new paths. Compare the results to identify areas of alignment and misalignment, offering a clearer picture of your compatibility with different roles.

What are your career goals?

Assess whether your current career provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment, and consider how a career change might contribute to a greater sense of personal and professional fulfilment.

Does your dream career balance with reality?

Consider practical aspects by conducting a financial assessment. Evaluate your current financial situation, estimate the potential impact of a career change, and consider short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. Simultaneously, engage in market research within your desired industry or role. Investigate the job market, identify in-demand skills, and evaluate the potential for growth and stability in the new field.
