With all the effort and time spent on your makeup, the last thing you want is for it to smudge and fade by midday.

Thankfully, there are many makeup products that promise long-lasting properties today. Besides giving you a smooth transition from boardroom to bar, many also promise transfer-, sweat- and humidity-resistant formulas.

But does this mean we have to adopt a more rigorous cleansing routine to ensure that these products are thoroughly removed? Makeup artist Lasalle Lee says: “Using cleansing oil or micellar water, followed by face wash, is sufficient. Over-cleansing will strip off the natural oils on your face, leading to dryness.”

How to prep

To prolong your makeup, Lasalle shares that skincare prep before makeup application is crucial. He cautions that “as most base makeup now includes skincare benefits, we shouldn’t use beauty products that are too rich”. In other words, go for lightweight products so that your skin is less likely to become greasy afterwards.

When you’re done with applying your base, be sure to set it with loose powder, followed by a setting spray. “Continue with the rest of your makeup, and spritz another light layer of setting spray over your face,” adds Lasalle.

OUR TOP PICKS

The Her World team share their verdicts.

1. Givenchy Le Rouge Sheer Velvet Lipstick, $62

“True to its name, the Givenchy Le Rogue Sheer Velvet lipstick went on much lighter than expected given its rich colour. I also liked that the velvety finish didn’t feel drying at all. After an oily plate of chicken rice, the colour sheered out, leaving a pretty lip stain in place.” – Elizabeth Lee, editor-in-chief

2. Dior Forever Cushion Foundation, $120 (for case and refill)

“It imparts a stunning matte finish with buildable coverage. What stands out is its ability to not only even out the complexion, but also blur pores. I did, however, notice some feathering in areas that are prone to oiliness, like my nose and forehead, after a few hours of wear. Despite this, I find it to be a reliable choice for coverage, especially for those who appreciate that second-skin finish.” – Shazrina Shamsudin, senior digital writer

3. Benefit Fan Fest Mascara, $48

“The partially curved wand makes it easy to grip every lash, even in the hard-to-reach inner corners. One coat is enough to fan out and darken the lashes. You might not get dramatic volume and curl with this mascara, but it definitely delivers in terms of adding length. I was also pleasantly surprised by how well it held up. Even though my lashes started to droop by the end of the day, there was hardly any smudging or flaking.” – Letty Seah, beauty editor
