7 WAYS THE CANON DIGIC 7 PROCESSOR MAKES PHOTOS BETTER
If the image sensor is the heart of a Canon camera, the DIGIC processor is its brain. It crunches vast amounts of data before, during, and after taking a photograph. The latest version is the DIGIC 7, and here’s how it helps you get better photographs.

1. INTERPRETS FOR BEAUTY
What comes out of your image sensor is pure, raw data — data that you’d hardly want to upload to Instagram. The DIGIC 7 interprets the image to make it beautiful, doing things like adjusting contrast, color and correcting aberrations and distortion.
2. REDUCES IMAGE NOISE EVEN IN DARK SITUATIONS
Dark situations, like shots at night, require high ISO speeds, and shooting at high ISO is even cleaner with the DIGIC 7 processor. Noise reduction has been improved, and because the DIGIC 7 can process approximately 14 times more data than the DIGIC 6, it can reduce image noise more precisely, preserving image details with high clarity.
3. REDUCES DIFFRACTION PHENOMENON EVEN AT SMALL APERTURES
Shooting at smaller apertures helps you retain more of the focal plane in focus, which is especially important when shooting landscape. However, the smaller the aperture, the greater the risk that you’ll see a loss of ne detail in the image, also known as the diffraction phenomenon. The DIGIC 7 makes it possible to reduce and correct diffraction phenomenon, even at small apertures, so you’ll retain image details.
4. PRODUCES IMAGES WITH RICHER CONTRASTS
The DIGIC 7 has improved Auto Lighting Optimizer and Intelligent Contrast Correction, which keep images looking natural while achieving contrast. Contrast is important, as it’s what makes an image ‘pop.’ The Auto Lighting Optimizer helps to compensate for brightness intelligently while maintaining contrast, which is helpful when photographing scenes with varying brightness, like people in backlit environments.
5. FOCUSES AND TRACKS SUBJECTS MORE ACCURATELY
The DIGIC 7 does advanced image analysis using subject information, which helps the camera and the right subject and track focus. Detection performance has been improved for difficult subjects, like subjects that blend into the background. The DIGIC 7 makes high-precision tracking possible even when the subjects move around, and mistaken tracking has been reduced, such as when a person crosses in front of another. Better face tracking helps to keep your friends and loved ones in focus.
6. SHARPER IMAGES WITH IMPROVED IMAGE STABILIZATION
The DIGIC 7 significantly improves image stabilization because of its ability to analyze image blur in realtime based on image information. A new algorithm was developed that merges angular shake information from the gyro sensor and image information to better stabilize the image when shooting, so you have a stronger chance of getting a sharp image when handholding the camera.
7. INTRODUCES NEW SHOOTING FEATURES LIKE PANNING
Because of the DIGIC 7’s advanced features, like subject tracking and image stabilization, it enables new features like panning, which captures fast subjects in sharp focus while the background is blurred, creating motion in a still image.
