WHAT: Plasma Regen Hair Therapy ($280; 90 minutes) WHERE: Svenson at #09-06 International Building

When it comes to hair, almost every long-haired lass wants the same thing: full, lustrous locks that feel smooth and soft to the touch, that radiate vitality from root to tip. The “full” part is of particular concern to me lately, as I’ve noted an increased number of strands where they shouldn’t be: on the floor and my wide-tooth hairbrush. And so off I went to Svenson to try its Plasma Regen Hair Therapy, which harnesses plasma and ultrasound technologies as well as the brand’s specially formulated products to deal with thinning locks.

The consultation was thorough, with the trichologist asking lifestyle questions as well as medical ones to get to the root cause(s) of my problem. I liked that she took the time to really explain how one’s lifestyle, especially one’s sleeping and eating habits as well as stress, can affect hair health. A scalp analysis revealed my problem: hair follicles clogged with a build-up of sebum, product and dead skin cells.

A relaxing shoulder massage kicked off the treatment, followed by the application of a clarifying mask that felt refreshingly cool; this was massaged into the scalp while a red ultraviolet light – said to stimulate hair growth – shone overhead. After 10 minutes or so, the mask was washed off and a 15-minute steaming session commenced. The heat, I was told, opens up follicles and unclogs them for a deeper cleanse. Weirdly, my scalp felt cool instead of warm – the residual effect of the mask used at the start of the session. Cool.

Next, an antibacterial serum was applied; this was complemented by the use of Plasmaporation, delivered via one of two handheld applicators on the Plason machine. The technology harnesses plasma energy to eliminate bacteria without damaging tissue, encourage cell renewal and aid product absorption. An anti-hair-loss serum followed, this time complemented by Sonoporation, which generates ultrasonic energy to stimulate microcirculation and collagen production as well as boost absorption. The entire process was painless – the applicators gave quite a good head massage, actually.

While there wasn’t a visible difference in volume (as the trichologist had clearly explained at the start, at least 10 sessions are needed before that happens), my scalp did feel much cleaner, and a post-treatment scalp analysis backed me up. As to whether the treatment would yield the result it promises – a fuller head of hair – I guess only time (and a whole lot more sessions) will tell. – SY
