JUDY CHICAGO’S new Herstor y exhibition at the New Museum partners Dior to spectacular effect.

- Words: JACQUIE ANG

“Women’s work has been relegated to the sidelines, and changing that has been my life goal,” declared Judy Chicago. The American feminist artist’s mission unfolds in her latest exhibition, Judy Chicago: Herstory, spotlighting her massive body of multidisciplinary work spanning 60 years.

Not only has the New Museum set a precedent by being the first art institution in New York to present the most comprehensive survey of her oeuvre, it expands the boundaries of a traditional museum survey by juxtaposing her works with those by other leading lights in feminism, creating an exceptional exhibitionwithin- an- exhibition. Artworks and archival materials from over 80 artists, writers and thinkers the likes of Simone de Beauvoir, Hildegard of Bingen, Artemisia Gentileschi,

Frida Kahlo and Virginia Woolf are put together in this incredible installation entitled The City of Ladies.

Spread across four floors of the sevenstorey museum, Chicago’s retrospective includes The Female Divine, the monumental depiction of the body of a goddess she had specially designed in collaboration with Dior’s artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The colossal inflatable work served as the set for the Spring/summer 2020 haute couture show in the heart of Musée Rodin’s garden, magnifying their shared commitment to female empowerment. The artwork continued to make waves after the event – it was the first time that one of the shows produced an exhibition that opened to public.

Chicago extended the partnership by participating in the fifth edition of Dior Lady Art in 2020 as one of the 10 global artists and collectives invited to reimagine the iconic

Lady Dior handbag. She went on to grace the recent Lady 95.22 bag ad campaign shot by French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, adding another link to the ongoing creative collaboration.

Judy Chicago: Herstory, supported by Dior’s lead sponsorship, will be on display until Jan 14, 2024.
