A MATTER OF SELF

-

“I love you, but I love me more,” says Samantha Jones in what is one of the most unsatisfying break- ups in Sex and the City. Unsatisfying because her partner is Greek god- level cute and devoted enough to support her through cancer. But needs are needs, and Samantha has always been a woman who knows what she wants and has the temerity and means to make it happen. For many of us, the route to self- fulfilment is more complex than a simple cutting of ties. I am talking about familial and professional obligations, health concerns or situations beyond our control. Which leads us to this month’s theme of “Self ”, where we look at personal care and individual expression in their many manifestations.

For a cosmetic boost, the Prestige team evaluates the latest beauty treatments in town, including the oxygen- in- a- capsule therapy at the new Como Shambhala. For internal nourishment, contributing food and travel writer Victoria Burrows speaks to chefs in Singapore and around the globe about cultivating their own produce to create healthy cuisines. We even gleaned some lessons from celebrity aesthetics doctor Dr Joe, our cover personality, on how to maintain mental well- being.

Also in this “Self ” issue, we asked veteran jewellery and watch journalists Mindy Teh and Darren Ho to expound on their personal relationships with their subjects. They submitted stories that are both moving and hilarious, about anchoring memories and finding the perfect watch to match your personality. The latter is open for debate and should your conversation dry up before the yu sheng, we dare say this is a topic that will fire up certain circles.

In the run- up to Chinese New Year, we’ve got you covered with our curation of themed watches, lucky jewellery, and buzzy places to shop. Dive in. After all, the term “retail therapy” wouldn’t exist if there weren’t some element of self- help in it. Here’s wishing Prestige readers a healthy and spirited festive season.

?? ?? The earth laughs in flowers, says poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. That sense of joy is surely transposed onto this Daisy clip from 1964, displayed in Van Cleef & Arpels’ Precious Nature Exhibition, on at the brand’s Raffles Arcade location until June. The piece is among the nature-inspired high jewellery curated by the house to demonstrate its legendary craftsmanship. In the Daisy, platinum, yellow gold, rubies and diamonds form a flower so naturallooking it appears like it has just been plucked from the field. That’s artistry.
