The all-singing, all- dancing robots of science fiction are still some years away, but the humbler kitchen appliance has been chugging away for decades, chopping, slicing, mincing, mixing, cooking and washing, often enough without fuss and complaint.

And they’re getting better all the time: ovens that deliver perfect doneness factoring weight and food type, perfect espresso with pushbutton ease, and fridges that keep food fresh at a fraction of the power consumption. Even as manufacturers create appliances that are not only more efficient and effective with a smaller impact on the environment, but are also intelligent enough take out some of the guesswork that befuddle novice cooks, appliances are also increasingly getting networked to introduce a higher level of intelligent home automation. Think appliances that autonomously coordinate operation times in order to better manage power load and smoother workflow in the home.
