It took nearly half a century for ‘spectacles’ as a medical appliance in the 1930s to shed its social inadequacy and evolve into fashion ‘eyewear’ in the 1970s.

More than mere receptables for lenses to improve vision, eyewear in myriad colours and designs are increasingly worn as an accessory no different from brooches and jewellery, framing the face as much as the latter accentuate an outfit.

Shop with an eye to one’s own face shape: choose a tall frame to balance a long, narrow face shape; an oval or round frame to soften strong jawline and broad forehead; angular, geometric frames to add definition to a round face.
