BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT

Nine must-know beauty and wellness tips to look and feel radiant all year round

GET BACK TO BASICS

As our lives become increasingly hectic, it’s easy to neglect our health, especially where basic things like diet and skincare are concerned. In turn, this can affect how you feel and look. According to Dr Georgia Lee, medical doctor at TLC Lifestyle and founder of DRGL, Drspa and Drhair, one health tip that works is to go low on sugar and have a system of balancing calories. She explains, “For example, if you are going to have more wine, find a way to cut calories from other sources such as dessert.”

As for skin health, she advises using sunscreen from top to toe and starting a good skincare regime from young. She offers other tips for basic maintenance: “For pigmentation or acne issues, exfoliation using tried-and-tested microdermabrasion or with a specialised solution or chemical peels every six to eight weeks is recommended. However, avoid microdermabrasion if there is acne inflammation.”

Skin laxity and wrinkles that come with ageing are hard to avoid but can be countered using radio frequency or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound with or without infrared treatments. For optimal skin-lifting effects, Dr Lee suggests going for these treatments every four weeks, every three months or yearly, depending on the type of technology employed.

A diet rich in omega-3 (oily fish, walnuts), selenium (Brazil nuts, eggs) and zinc (lean red meat) will feed your skin too. For a more refined skin texture, Dr Lee suggests using non-ablative lasers every six to eight weeks, or less often if your skin is in good condition.

“Incorporate smart ways for burning calories into your daily activities— walk whenever the chance arises or stretch after sitting. And cover up with sunscreen from top to bottom, not forgetting the eyelids, neck and the rest of the body.” — Dr Georgia Lee, medical doctor, TLC Lifestyle, and founder of DRGL, Drspa and Drhair

HIT THE PAUSE BUTTON

Busy schedules mean more stressful lives. So it’s important to step back and take a deep breath, literally, says Buraya Ng, director of SK-II Boutique Spa by Senze Salus. A visit overseas to the countryside, such as Khao Yai and Wang Nam Kiew in northeastern Thailand, can take your mind off things for a bit. Ng shares, “During winter, the air there is so pure and fresh. I just took my children there, and they did not suffer from their usual allergies like they do anywhere else, including here in Singapore. It’s truly a breath of fresh air!”

When you do not have the time for an overseas vacation, she suggests trying the spa’s Senze Oxygenated Facial, a two-hour treatment that infuses a high concentration of pure oxygen into the skin and uses renowned SK-II products. The result? You’ll feel refreshed and rejuvenated, and your skin will look brighter, healthier and younger.

SMOOTH MOVES FOR BODY CONFIDENCE

If your goal is to be fuzz-free all over, then read on. For many women, body hair removal is an important part of grooming. “While no one can see what’s underneath your nice outfit, hair removal is crucial,” says Shin Yann Ow, director of Honeypot Wax Boutique. “The hygiene factor is the most important reason for hair removal. It makes you feel more self-confident as well. It’s the same reason why a woman wears nice lingerie beneath her outfit, even though it can’t be seen.”

Besides waxing, Honeypot offers IPL treatments that come with a comfort mode, which helps to reduce the pain factor. In 2018, Honeypot salons will also be launching a new skin-tightening treatment for the bikini area. The service uses the latest radio frequency technology to promote collagen production and improve skin elasticity, tone and texture.

SAVE TIME WHILE SAVING FACE

We all know that time is a precious commodity but the latest advances in medical aesthetics can help you save time while maintaining your beauty needs, says Cambridge Therapeutics’ general manager Elizabeth Leong. To help those seeking quick, non-invasive rejuvenation despite a busy schedule, the medical aesthetics spa offers time-saving treatments with zero downtime. For instance, the NEOGEN Plasma Facial uses plasma technology for anti-ageing and to heal skin, preventing fine lines and wrinkles from forming, without any downtime, redness or pain. Each session takes 10 to 20 minutes. Body contouring treatments include Clatuu Fat Freeze, which uses a novel 360-degree cooling system for permanent fat reduction, as well as SYGMALIFT Body Contouring, using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and Cold 635 Laser technology to break down cellulite and fat.
