RICH TEXTURES AND MULTIFACETED FEATURES IMBUE THIS HOME WITH AN AIR OF MODERN MAJESTY
Sumisura’s opulent design gives this abode an air of modern majesty
As a multi-awarded interior design firm that has been lauded by the International Design & Architecture Awards, the International Property Awards and the Asia Pacific Property Awards, just to name a few, Sumisura is proficient in creating living spaces for a diverse demographic of affluent clientele. Among the firm’s favourite projects, this Palms @ Sixth Avenue home stands out as one of its most memorable endeavours. “The client got in touch with us because he saw and liked our work located in the same area,” says Angela Lim, director of Sumisura. “He had a preference for modern interiors, but wanted a space with a dramatic feel. Thus, we decided to embark on a contemporary luxe concept for this house.”
IN THE MOOD
Sumisura sought to create a sense of progression and a distinct contrast between the architecture and interiors. Indeed, the property’s minimalist facade conceals a contrastingly majestic interior. In the living area, the firm installed a bespoke threedimensional wall panelling and added mood lighting that endows the area with warmth. “During the design phase, our team wanted to create a statement that was immediately visible. We decided to incorporate a beautifully crafted mahogany wood feature wall that stretches from the living hall to the dry kitchen,” she explains of this dramatic design detail that ties the abode together. As a finishing touch, exceptional fabrics are accompanied by distinctive objets d’art crafted from polished metal, ceramic and glass. A common ground in this project was the evolution of certain spaces. The former dining area was transformed into a graceful drawing room, which now has an extravagant island bar that anchors the space and works as a conversation piece. Practical considerations were achieved with a clever touch—the powder room is partially hidden by a door, for example— but each design trick is enveloped in elegance. A consistent use of earth tones, luxe materials such as marble and leather, and subtle geometric details creates a cohesive language throughout the home.
MAXIMUM IMPACT
The roof offers a panoramic view of the Coronation Road and Sixth Avenue neighbourhood—and the client had some ideas on how to maximise his enjoyment of it. “The client wanted the entire lap pool to be removed and converted into a wider open terrace for his potted plants. He also wanted to have a barbecue area and an outdoor living area,” says Lim. Meanwhile, below ground, the client’s prized dinnerware collection takes pride of place in the house’s once-neglected basement, which enjoys a new lease of life as the family’s eight-seater dining room. Light was applied sparingly to highlight the design objects; the illumination is then bounced off perpendicular mirrors to invigorate the room with a capacious feel. “The family room was merged with a bedroom so that their daughter can enjoy a larger space for her lounger, wardrobe and dressing table,” says Lim. While the rooms of the owner’s daughters are characterised by gentle colours and a cosy feel, the master bedroom, which occupies a whole floor, was an ambitious undertaking. “We consulted with the client to see if they would allow us to convert two rooms into an
extended walk-in wardrobe. Our client gave us the green light so we demolished and created new walls to connect both bedrooms,” she says, expounding on the scale of work that went into the master bedroom. As expected, the bedroom perpetuates the home’s use of elegant, luxurious materials. “A French door was created with wall lamps on both sides. We also created a foyer, which has replaced the space that used to be in between the two previous rooms.” Walking us through the home, Lim continues, “As you step into the master foyer, you’ll see the fine detail of the ebony-finish display credenza on both sides, separated by a remarkable artwork.” Illuminated by warm-white LED lighting, this serves as a space for the client’s favourite art pieces. Another three-dimensional mural was tailor-made as the bed’s backdrop—a floral piece that provides an ethereal feel to the bedroom. This detail is, as Lim puts it, “something the family absolutely adores.” It shows that sometimes, it’s the small things that make the biggest impact. A good thing is that for Sumisura, they make sure that every detail counts.
