Thoughtful and stylish details to turn your living area into a cosy family space
Home is where the heart is—and thoughtful design helps make it a cosy sanctuary for the whole family. Within a multigenerational home, you’ll need to consider how to best build shared spaces, such as the living area, so that everyone is well taken care of. This means watching out for safety hazards, as well as catering for the unique habits and needs of each member of the family—furry pets included. According to design directors Jennifer Murray and Divya Anthony from The Mill Group, shared spaces such as living rooms need to be versatile and safe. “Sharp-cornered coffee tables can be especially dangerous, as they are usually at the same height as the heads of toddlers—so replace coffee tables with stylish ottomans to keep your living room baby-friendly,” says Murray, who suggests choosing soft upholstered furniture and items with rounded edges. Family life can also get pretty messy with infants and pets, so Anthony recommends stain-resistant and washable materials that are easy to clean. “Accidents happen, so being able to quickly wipe and wash the material can save you from costly cleaning and repairs,” she says. These innovative decor details will make your living room a welcoming space for all. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT Movie night is a great way to bring the whole family together.
