DEFYING CONVENTION
Watchmakers are always finding new ways to pique our interest, and the use of unconventional materials is one way to do it. A number of brands were sporting new elements this year, such as Tudor, with its use of bronze in its latest Heritage Black Bay watch. In its quest for more durable but lightweight watches, Breitling has released a proprietary new material called Breitlight, that’s 3.3 times lighter than titanium, but harder than steel, on its 50mm Avenger Hurricane timepiece. Hublot, meanwhile, has bared the intricacies of its in-house Unico movement with a sapphire case. Ulysse Nardin, on the other hand, uses wood marquetry on the dial of its Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon to beautifully evoke a ship’s deck.
