The market atmosphere here makes for a lively backdrop suitable for family gatherings, the highlight being the extensive spread of Peranakan and local fare. At the live station, you can have your fill of its addictive laksa, as well as crispy-shelled kueh pie tee filled with the usual mix of julienned ingredients. You’ll also find dishes such as ayam buah keluak, where chunks of chicken are prepared in an earthy buah keluak gravy; babi pongteh (nyonya-style stewed pork); and nyonya chap chye, a delicious marriage of cabbage, black fungus, mung bean vermicelli, tofu sheets and dried lily bulbs—a good side dish to the meaty mains. The open kitchen also serves up tasty soya chicken, stir-fried prawns in herbal dang gui sauce, and slipper lobster doused in a flavourful black bean sauce. Whatever you choose to have, be sure to save space for its famous durian pengat. This sweet, creamy dessert is made with the premium D24 variety and fresh cream.

TATLER TIP
